The entire Christendom will be observing Holy Week this March 2008. The annual tradition of all Christians around the world is in remembrance of Jesus Christ sacrifices to save the world from sin. In the Philippines where devotion to Christ is strong, the observance of Holy Week is not only about prayers, self reflection and confession of sins but the re-enactment of Jesus crucifixion in the Calvary.
The actual crucifixion is already part of the cultural ritual of the people in San Fernando Pampanga in Central Luzon. The re-enactment of Jesus crucifixion is known all over the world. Every year foreign tourists and international media organizations flocks to this town just to witness the crucifixions of men who regularly volunteers to act as Jesus.
The penance that comes with the actual crucifixions of individuals has encouraged locals to continue their strong faith as they observe the Holy Week. The re-enactment will be held this coming Good Friday (March 21, 2008). The characters will portray the Via Crusis or the Way of the Cross.
